August 3, 2026 / SemiMedia / — NXP Semiconductors is reportedly in discussions to acquire edge AI chip developer Ambarella as it seeks to expand its automotive computer-vision and intelligent-perception portfolio.

The discussions are continuing and may not result in a transaction, according to people familiar with the matter. Other potential buyers could still emerge, while NXP and Ambarella have not publicly commented on the report.

Ambarella is a fabless semiconductor company that develops low-power edge AI systems-on-chip, computer-vision processors and related software platforms.

Its products are used in advanced driver-assistance systems, autonomous vehicles, video-security cameras, industrial equipment and robotics.

The company’s CVflow architecture enables devices to perform object detection, classification, tracking, image processing and deep-neural-network inference locally without continuously transferring large volumes of video data to the cloud.

Ambarella also entered the radar-perception software market through its acquisition of Oculii. The acquired technology combines adaptive radar algorithms with camera vision and AI processing for automotive and robotic perception systems.

These capabilities would complement NXP’s existing automotive portfolio.

NXP already supplies S32 automotive processors, 77GHz radar transceivers, radar SoCs, in-vehicle networking products, power-management devices and functional-safety technologies.

Acquiring Ambarella could allow NXP to combine computer vision, edge AI acceleration and radar-perception software with its automotive processors, radar hardware and vehicle-networking products.

The resulting portfolio could provide automakers and Tier 1 suppliers with a broader platform covering sensing, processing, connectivity and software for ADAS applications.
