October 26, 2026 / SemiMedia / — Infineon has introduced the XDP8HD40S-1 high-voltage hot-swap controller for digital power-path protection and monitoring in ±400 V and 800 VDC AI server architectures. The device controls external power switches to support connection and disconnection of power modules, converters and server subsystems while the system remains energized.
To manage startup inrush current and power-switch stress, the controller integrates digital Safe Operating Area (SOA) control with programmable and preconfigured active protections. A variable-pulse SOA mode, called Boost Mode, optimizes startup behavior while keeping the external switch within its safe operating limits.
The integrated gate driver supports an external SiC cascode stage combining a MOSFET and JFET, including implementations using Infineon’s OptiMOS MOSFETs and CoolSiC JFETs. Surge immunity protection and a configurable 1.5 A pull-down current support rapid switch shutdown during abnormal conditions.
For telemetry, 12-bit current and voltage ADCs provide stated measurement accuracies of approximately 1% for voltage, 1% for current and 3% for power. A separate analog power-monitoring output offers 1.5% reporting accuracy, while integrated energy metering supports continuous tracking of consumption.
A PMBus 1.5 interface with enhanced security features connects the controller to system management and remote diagnostics. Built-in black-box recording captures critical event information for fault analysis. Additional functions include programmable input and output overvoltage and undervoltage protection, external temperature-sensor support and overtemperature protection.
The controller’s local supply ranges are 4.5 V to 24 V for VDDB and 4.5 V to 13.2 V for VDDA; the ±400 V and 800 V ratings describe its target system architectures. Applications include intermediate bus converters, rack power distribution, battery backup, peak shaving and single- or dual-side hot-swap designs.
The XDP8HD40S-1 uses a 10.7 × 10.3 mm LFDSO-40 package. Samples are targeted for the second quarter of 2027.
