Sony to restart Kumamoto image sensor production in stages from August 4

July 31, 2026 / SemiMedia / — Sony Semiconductor Solutions will begin restarting production at its Kumamoto Technology Center in stages on August 4 following the magnitude 7.1 earthquake that struck Japan’s Kyushu region.

The company expects the facility to return to its pre-earthquake operating level by mid-August.

Sony said safety inspections of the site’s buildings and manufacturing facilities have been completed. Recovery work, equipment checks and preparations for restarting production are currently underway.

Operations at the Kumamoto Technology Center in Kikuyo, Kumamoto Prefecture, were suspended immediately after the earthquake on July 28 while Sony assessed the condition of its buildings and manufacturing lines.

No employee casualties were reported at Sony’s affected sites.

The company also confirmed that no significant damage had been identified at its Nagasaki, Oita and Kagoshima technology centers. These facilities continued to provide geographic diversification across Sony’s image-sensor manufacturing network.

The Kumamoto facility produces image sensors used in digital cameras, security systems, industrial equipment and automotive applications. Automotive image sensors support functions including advanced driver-assistance systems, surrounding-area monitoring and road-environment recognition.

The plant does not manufacture image sensors for smartphones, limiting the direct effect on Sony’s principal mobile image-sensor supply.

However, the interruption could still affect short-term production schedules for camera, security and automotive sensors if equipment calibration or manufacturing yields take longer than expected to recover.

Image-sensor fabrication requires precise equipment alignment, controlled cleanroom conditions and stable manufacturing processes. Even when buildings remain structurally safe, manufacturers must inspect production tools, recalibrate equipment and assess wafers and other work in progress before resuming volume production.

Sony’s current schedule indicates that inspections have not identified damage requiring an extended shutdown. If the production ramp proceeds as planned, the interruption will last approximately one week and have a substantially smaller supply-chain impact than the 2016 Kumamoto earthquakes.

The 2016 disaster halted operations at the same Sony facility for more than three months, followed by an additional period before normal production levels were restored. The shorter recovery plan announced in 2026 reflects stronger seismic protection and business-continuity preparations.

Kumamoto has developed into one of Japan’s most important semiconductor manufacturing clusters. TSMC’s JASM subsidiary, Tokyo Electron, Mitsubishi Electric and Renesas Electronics all operate production facilities in the prefecture.

TSMC began gradually resuming operations at its JASM wafer fab after completing structural safety inspections, although detailed equipment checks and impact assessments continued.

Mitsubishi Electric has restarted equipment at two Kumamoto power-semiconductor plants, while Tokyo Electron expects to begin a phased return to full production at its local facilities on August 3.

Renesas began restarting its Nishiki factory on the evening of July 29. Its Kawashiri factory, where fallen ceiling panels, wall cracks and water leaks were reported, is scheduled to resume operations in stages from August 5.

The announced restart schedules reduce the risk of an extended semiconductor supply disruption. Equipment calibration, work-in-progress losses, production yields, local logistics and further aftershocks could nevertheless affect the timing of full recovery.

Sony’s progress toward restoring pre-earthquake output by mid-August will be an important indicator of the remaining supply risk for camera, security and automotive image sensors.
