June 10, 2026 /SemiMedia/ — KYOCERA AVX has expanded its TransGuard® VT series of high-temperature automotive-grade multilayer varistors with new devices designed for 48V automotive power supply systems.

The new 48V system MLVs are intended to provide bidirectional overvoltage protection and EMI/RFI attenuation in compact surface-mount packages, helping reduce board space and component count in automotive power architectures.

The TransGuard VT series uses zinc-oxide-based ceramic semiconductor technology and is designed for harsh electrical environments where systems may be exposed to ESD, load dumps and voltage spikes generated by motors, relays, engines, jump starts and other transient sources.

The new 48V devices are designed and tested for motor vehicles with 48V power supplies, rated for operating temperatures up to 150°C and additionally qualified to VDA-320.

The products are available in five EIA chip sizes, including 0805, 1206, 1210, 1812 and 2220. They are rated for 56VDC or 40VAC working voltage, 100V to 110V clamping voltage, 48V jump-start conditions, 30A to 1500A current handling, 0.2J to 9J transient energy and capacitance values from 80pF to 2800pF.

KYOCERA AVX said target applications include electric vehicles ranging from e-bikes, e-scooters and golf carts to passenger and commercial vehicles, as well as charging stations.

The broader TransGuard VT series supports operating temperatures from -55°C to +175°C with zero derating across the specified temperature range. The devices are qualified to AEC-Q200, IEC 61000-4-2 and ISO 10605, and offer high current and energy handling, multi-strike capability and low leakage.

The series also carries the highest human-body model ESD classification, Class 6, allowing the devices to withstand more than 25,000V of electrostatic discharge. The products also meet MSL 1 moisture sensitivity requirements, eliminating the need for special dry packing, handling or baking before reflow soldering under specified conditions.

Several TransGuard VT series part numbers, including some of the new 48V system MLVs, are available with KYOCERA AVX’s FLEXITERM® terminations. The termination technology is designed to withstand severe vibration, up to 5mm of board flexure and up to 3000 temperature cycles to 150°C without internal cracking.
