October 23, 2026 / SemiMedia / — Vishay has introduced four AEC-Q102-qualified optical sensors for battery management, energy storage and industrial automation systems. The VCND2040X02, VCND2040SLX02, VCND2045X02 and VCND2045SLX02 integrate an infrared emitter and PIN photodiode in a 4.4 × 2.25 × 1.9 mm surface-mount package, supporting data rates up to 6 Mbit/s and simultaneous bidirectional communication.
The VCND2040X02 and VCND2040SLX02 use single-stack emitters, with typical rise and fall times of 18 ns. The VCND2045X02 and VCND2045SLX02 use double-stack emitters that reduce both times to 9 ns. The X02 devices are supplied in a top-view orientation, while the SLX02 variants are supplied in a side-view orientation, allowing selection according to PCB layout and optical alignment requirements.
At 25°C and a forward current of 24 mA, typical emitter forward voltage is 1.5 V for the VCND2040 variants and 2.5 V for the VCND2045 variants. The double-stack devices offer faster response and higher optical output, requiring additional drive-voltage headroom. Switching times are typical values under the specified datasheet test conditions.
Two separate lenses and an internal optical barrier reduce crosstalk between the emitter and detector. The sensors support short-range free-space links, while external optics or fiber coupling can extend communication over several meters and accommodate bends or confined routing paths.
Battery management applications include communication between cell-monitoring and balancing nodes. Other uses include optical switches, encoders and position sensing. The optical path reduces exposure to RF interference, while the photodiode output requires supporting receiver circuitry alongside the emitter driver.
The devices feature wettable-flank lead frames and support top- or side-view assembly. Their operating ambient temperature range is −40°C to +110°C, with an MSL 3 moisture-sensitivity rating. Samples and production quantities are available, with an eight-week lead time quoted at launch.
