June 27, 2025 /SemiMedia/ — Nordic Semiconductor has announced the acquisition of U.S.-based IoT software startup Memfault for $120 million, aiming to bolster its device lifecycle management and over-the-air (OTA) services across its low-power wireless chip portfolio.

Memfault offers a cloud-based platform for monitoring, debugging, and updating embedded systems, particularly those based on microcontrollers (MCUs). The platform serves around 100 customers, many of whom use Nordic’s connectivity chips. It also supports hardware from Infineon, NXP, STMicroelectronics, Silicon Labs, Microchip, Renesas, Alif, Espressif, and Texas Instruments.

Following the deal, Nordic will merge its cellular device lifecycle management team with Memfault to consolidate development efforts. “Software complexity is exploding—with millions of lines of code and multi-core support—requiring tighter integration between silicon and cloud,” said Kjetil Holstad, EVP of Strategy at Nordic. “Memfault will help extend our RF behavioral insights into cloud-based diagnostics.”

Nordic said Memfault will continue to operate as an independent platform and support non-Nordic hardware ecosystems. While overlap with Linux- or Android-based systems may create some competitive friction, the company plans to maintain broad compatibility while focusing on a seamless Nordic-to-cloud technology stack.

Memfault has a 60-person team spread across California, New York, and Berlin. Its clients include major semiconductor and system companies such as Texas Instruments, NVIDIA, MediaTek, and Broadcom, a supplier for Raspberry Pi processors.
