Diodes launches programmable buck converter targeting high-density automotive power designs

December 5, 2025 /SemiMedia/ — Diodes Incorporated has introduced the AP61406Q, a programmable synchronous buck converter aimed at next-generation automotive point-of-load power systems used in infotainment, instrument clusters, telematics units, and ADAS platforms. The device is positioned to address growing demand for compact, high-efficiency power rails as semiconductor content continues to rise across the vehicle.

Programmable power control for automotive electronics

A distinguishing feature of the AP61406Q is its I2C 3.0-compatible interface, which supports clock rates up to 3.4MHz and allows engineers to configure key parameters such as operating mode, switching frequency, output current level, and voltage settings. The converter also reports fault and operating status information, enabling tighter control of distributed power networks.

Efficiency and reliability features for high-density power designs

The device is built for high-power-density environments and supplied in a compact W-QFN1520 package. Diodes says it uses a proprietary driver scheme that reduces switching-node ringing without slowing MOSFET transitions, helping lower radiated EMI in electrically crowded automotive systems.

Designed for a 2.3V to 5.5V input range, the AP61406Q integrates a 75mΩ high-side and 33mΩ low-side MOSFET to improve conversion efficiency. Its constant on-time control reduces external components and simplifies compensation, resulting in low output ripple suited for space-constrained modules.

Protection features include high-side and low-side current sensing for short-circuit events, undervoltage lockout, input overvoltage protection, peak and valley current limiting, and thermal shutdown. The multifunction enable pin supports mode selection, allowing systems to balance low-IQ behavior with high-load performance.

The AP61406Q is priced at $0.24 in 1,000-piece quantities. A non-automotive AP61406 version is also available for industrial and consumer markets.
