Hybrid surge design enhances reliability

December 1, 2025 /SemiMedia/ — TDK Corporation has expanded its surge-protection portfolio with the launch of the G-series hybrid components, a lineup that merges a metal oxide varistor with a gas discharge tube in a single package. The series, available in G14 and G20 versions, is designed for equipment that requires stable overvoltage protection, including power supplies, chargers and communication systems.

Unlike conventional parallel arrangements, TDK’s series connection isolates the MOV during regular operation, virtually eliminating leakage current and reducing thermal and electrical stress. The approach also helps extend component lifetime — a growing concern in high-reliability industrial and communications hardware.

Performance ratings and industrial suitability

During surge events, the GDT acts first by switching to a low-resistance state to absorb the initial pulse, while the MOV clamps the residual voltage and handles the remaining energy. This prevents follow-current issues that can cause the GDT to reignite, improving system robustness and reducing the need for complex discrete layouts.

The G-series is offered in 14 mm and 20 mm disk sizes. G14 models cover AC operating voltages from 50 V to 680 V, while the G20 version extends support to 750 V. Surge current ratings reach 6,000 A for G14 and 10,000 A for G20 under an 8/20 µs pulse, with maximum energy absorption of 200 J and 490 J respectively. The components operate from –40 °C to +105 °C, aligning with requirements for harsh-environment applications.
