UK allocates £11.5 million to boost semiconductor industry

October 2, 2024 /SemiMedia/ — The UK government has announced £11.5 million in funding to help 16 semiconductor companies scale up operations and contribute to economic growth. The funds, unveiled by Science Minister Patrick Vallance, will be administered through Innovate UK.

Innovate UK, which channels £8 billion in taxpayer money annually into research and innovation, is providing this £11.5 million as part of the government’s broader investments in technology. The funding aims to expand domestic semiconductor manufacturing and strengthen supply chain resilience.

The UK semiconductor sector is currently valued at £10 billion, with projections indicating growth to £17 billion by 2030. The funds are expected to drive further advancements in the field.

One recipient, Vector Photonics Limited, is collaborating with the University of Glasgow to improve the power and cost efficiency of blue light lasers using high-performance materials such as gallium nitride. These lasers are used in medical devices, quantum displays, and automotive headlights.

Another beneficiary, Quantum Advanced Solutions Ltd, is working with the University of Cambridge to develop shortwave infrared (SWIR) sensors to enhance visual capabilities in defence. The company is employing quantum dot materials to simplify production, benefiting industries including manufacturing and healthcare alongside defence.
