July 29, 2026 / SemiMedia / — TDK Corporation has introduced the Micronas HVC 5422C automotive-qualified embedded motor controller for brushed DC and brushless DC motor applications.

The device combines a motor driver, microcontroller and LIN communication functions in a single package. It is designed for compact smart actuators used in automotive thermal-management, comfort and energy-efficiency systems.

The HVC 5422C supports advanced field-oriented control for smoother BLDC motor operation with reduced torque ripple and acoustic noise. Target applications include grille shutters, valves, airflow-control systems and other actuators in combustion, hybrid and electric vehicles.

The controller integrates three half-bridges capable of delivering up to 1A peak drive current. Its processing and memory resources include an Arm Cortex-M3 CPU, 64KB of Flash memory, 4KB of emulated EEPROM and 1KB of non-volatile registers.

Compared with earlier HVC 5x devices, the additional memory provides more space for sophisticated motor-control algorithms, diagnostic functions and application-specific software. It also provides resources for supporting over-the-air software updates.

Integrating control, communication and motor-driving functions in one device can reduce the number of external components, PCB area and overall bill-of-materials cost in compact actuator modules.

The HVC 5422C supports both sensored and sensorless motor-control architectures. Sensored designs can use position feedback for improved starting and low-speed performance, while sensorless operation can reduce the number of external sensors and connections.

An integrated LIN transceiver with auto-addressing enables the device to operate as part of a distributed automotive actuator network. The controller also provides seven GPIOs and an integrated 3.3V output for powering external sensors and peripheral functions.

TDK has included a software-protection mechanism based on an optional 256-bit unlock key. The feature is intended to protect programmed application software and intellectual property. Additional security measures must still be implemented at the system level for secure communication, authentication and vehicle-network protection.

The HVC 5422C is supplied in a compact 5 × 5mm PQFN24 package. Samples are available now, with volume production scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2027.
