October 23, 2026 / SemiMedia / — Microchip has expanded its L-Series timing portfolio with the LX-820 radiation-tolerant quartz oscillator for Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and other space applications. Its 3.2 × 2.5 mm hermetically sealed surface-mount package targets compact timing references for small satellites, CubeSats and communications payloads.
The LX-820 offers CMOS outputs from 1.25 MHz to 135 MHz. LVDS options cover 100 MHz to 250 MHz with a 2.5 V or 3.3 V supply, while the upper limit is 175 MHz at 1.8 V. Temperature and frequency-tolerance options include operation from −55°C to +125°C and ±100 ppm overall tolerance, incorporating initial accuracy and operating-temperature effects.
Radiation testing was performed on complete oscillators. The datasheet states that measured parameters remained within specification after a 50 krad total ionizing dose. The LX-820 also underwent single-event latchup testing. Alongside standard Microchip verification, customers can select MIL-PRF-55310 Product Level B screening, including at least 160 hours of burn-in at 125°C.
The L-Series sits between commercial off-the-shelf oscillators and traditional high-reliability space timing products. It combines commercial- or military-grade components with production inspection, electrical and thermal analysis, and hybrid manufacturing.
The portfolio includes XOs, temperature-compensated oscillators, oven-controlled oscillators and a PPS-disciplined oscillator. These architectures address different size, power, stability, phase-noise and synchronization requirements. Most L-Series products use swept quartz to reduce radiation-induced frequency drift, while the series’ OCXOs incorporate ruggedized construction and four-point crystal mounts.
The LX-820 and other L-Series oscillators are available in production quantities. Microchip said many configurations are available from stock or with lead times below 20 weeks, depending on the selected device and configuration.
