August 7, 2026 / SemiMedia / — AMD has agreed to acquire Canadian artificial-intelligence chip startup Taalas as it expands its product portfolio for the growing data center market.

AMD said Thursday that it had entered into a definitive agreement to acquire the Toronto-based company. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Taalas develops chip technology designed for AI inference, the stage in which trained artificial-intelligence models process user queries and generate responses.

The startup said its approach hardcodes AI models directly into chips, enabling devices that can perform inference more efficiently than existing solutions.

AMD is seeking additional ways to differentiate its products from those offered by market leader Nvidia.

The company said Taalas’ technology will be incorporated into its product roadmap in the form of server-computing components.

AMD is the world’s second-largest manufacturer of graphics processing units. GPUs are capable of processing large volumes of data and are widely used to train and operate artificial-intelligence software.

As the AI industry shifts from primarily training models toward deploying services at scale, attention is increasingly turning to alternative chips capable of running AI software more efficiently or at higher speeds.
