October 17, 2025 /SemiMedia/ — Renesas Electronics Corporation has introduced three new magnet-free inductive position sensor ICs — the RAA2P3226, RAA2P3200 and RAA2P4200 — along with a web-based design tool to accelerate customization and development of industrial sensing systems. The new devices offer a cost-efficient, high-precision alternative to magnetic and optical encoders in industrial, robotic, and motor control applications.

The new IPS family employs non-contact coil sensor technology that uses metallic targets with single or dual coil setups to detect rotary and linear positions. Designed to operate in challenging environments — including temperatures from -40°C to 125°C, dust, moisture and electromagnetic interference — these sensors require no maintenance and deliver long-term stability for automation and motor systems.

The RAA2P3226 supports dual-coil sensing with up to 19-bit resolution and 0.01° absolute accuracy, ideal for robotic joint control. The RAA2P3200 is optimized for high-speed motor commutation, while the single-coil RAA2P4200 serves low-speed applications such as medical instruments and power tools. All models include automatic calibration and linearization to simplify design integration.

Renesas also announced plans to release automotive-grade IPS devices, the RAA2P452x and RAA2P4500, later this year. The RAA2P452x will support ASIL D compliance when paired with Renesas MCUs, offering a reliable and cost-effective solution for body control and chassis systems.

Complementing the hardware, Renesas launched the Inductive Position Sensor Coil Optimizer, a web-based tool that automates coil layout, simulation and tuning, helping engineers quickly achieve optimal performance. According to Leopold Beer, Vice President of Renesas’ Sensors Division, the tool “eliminates technical barriers and enables engineers of all levels to design robust inductive sensing systems with confidence.”

All three sensor ICs are now in mass production with evaluation kits available, while the automotive-grade variants are scheduled for Q4 2025. More information is available at www.renesas.com/IPS.
