Murata launches soft-termination 0805 MLCC for automotive power and safety systems

June 4, 2026 /SemiMedia/ — Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. has introduced the GCJ21BD72A225KE02, a soft-termination multilayer ceramic chip capacitor (MLCC) designed for automotive powertrain and safety systems. The new 0805-inch (2.0×1.25 mm) MLCC achieves 2.2 μF at 100 Vdc, the highest available capacitance in this small size worldwide.

As vehicle electrification accelerates and autonomous driving (AD) and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) become more complex, engineers face increasing pressure to integrate more functionality into limited board space. The wider adoption of 48V power systems also demands components with high capacitance, high voltage tolerance and a compact footprint. Mechanical stress from PCB flexure caused by vibration and thermal cycling during driving remains a key reliability concern, which the GCJ21BD72A225KE02 addresses.

Built on Murata’s proprietary ceramic material design, including fine particle size and uniformity control, the soft-termination MLCC achieves 2.2 μF/100 Vdc in 0805 size—a rating previously only available in 1206 size (3.2×1.6 mm). This reduces board mounting area by approximately 51% compared with Murata’s previous 2.2 μF/100 Vdc product, and increases capacitance by about 2.2× over the previous 0805 100 Vdc product. Soft termination further enhances field reliability by absorbing board flexure stress and reducing post-mount cracking.

The device operates across -55°C to +125°C and meets EIA X7T temperature characteristics.
