GlobalFoundries cuts staff at New York Fab 8 amid $16 billion expansion

September 1, 2025 /SemiMedia/ — GlobalFoundries has made staff reductions at its Fab 8 plant in Saratoga County, New York, though the company did not disclose the number of employees affected or the roles involved.

The chipmaker said the move is aimed at improving efficiency and aligning its workforce with long-term strategic priorities. While trimming headcount in certain areas, the company plans to keep hiring in critical segments. GlobalFoundries employs about 13,000 people worldwide and operates facilities in the United States, Europe, and Asia.

The latest cuts follow a 2023 layoff in which the company shed about 800 jobs, including 221 at Fab 8, as part of a $200 million cost reduction plan triggered by weaker demand for mobile devices.

Despite current job cuts, industry conditions have improved. GlobalFoundries reported second-quarter revenue of $1.7 billion and net income of $228 million, beating expectations. However, market analysts remain cautious about its longer-term trajectory.

At the same time, GlobalFoundries is scaling up its U.S. manufacturing footprint. The company raised its planned investment from $13 billion to $16 billion, covering expansions in Malta, New York, and Burlington, Vermont. A second factory in Malta is part of the project. GlobalFoundries said the $1.5 billion subsidy it secured under the U.S. CHIPS Act remains intact and involves no equity transfer.
