May 6, 2024 /SemiMedia/ --  According to reports, pure MEMS foundry Rogue Valley Microdevices said that the second wafer fab it is building in Palm Bay, Florida, will have 300mm wafer foundry production capabilities.

According to earlier reports, Rogue Valley Microdevices acquired a commercial building located at 2301 Commercial Drive, Palm Bay, in June 2023 for the construction of a MEMS and sensor wafer fab, with an estimated monthly production of 21,000 wafers. The factory is expected to employ about 75 people and start production in 2025.

The report pointed out that Rogue Valley is the first pure MEMS foundry to announce that it will provide customers with 300mm foundry capabilities. The second company is Silex Microsystems, which plans to build a 300mm-capable wafer fab at its Swedish headquarters.

300mm MEMS wafer foundry has economies of scale compared to 200mm wafers, which can benefit microneedle products used in healthcare applications. The technology could be used for dermal drug delivery, biosensors such as continuous glucose monitoring devices for diabetics, and applications such as vaccines.
