Qualcomm opens new 5G/ Wi-Fi connectivity design center in Chennai, India

March 19, 2024 /SemiMedia/ -- According to reports, Qualcomm announced a new design center in Chennai, India, specializing in wireless connectivity solutions. This fabless semiconductor company will help India conduct 5G and 6G research.

The design center, which will cost Rs 177.27 crore and will create 1,600 jobs, will work on 5G cellular technology and will also drive Qualcomm's roadmap in Wi-Fi technology. In addition to the design center, Qualcomm also announced a 6G academic research program to support 6G technology in India.

Qualcomm President Cristiano Amon said the Chennai team has played an important role in developing Wi-Fi breakthrough technologies such as Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7.

According to Qualcomm’s statement, the new design center in Chennai is an important asset supporting Qualcomm’s commitment to manufacturing in India. Research and development is the center's core expertise and will be a key driver of Qualcomm's business growth and accelerate market adoption of advanced wireless technology solutions.

Qualcomm has maintained its R&D presence in India for many years. The company announced plans to increase investments in India, including $1 billion in 2024 alone.
