August 14, 2026 / SemiMedia / — Littelfuse has introduced the TPSMD-FL Series FlatSuppressX TVS diodes for ISO 7637-2 Pulse 5b load-dump protection in 12 V automotive electronic systems.
A load-dump transient can occur when a vehicle battery is disconnected while the alternator is charging. The resulting high-energy overvoltage on the 12 V power rail can damage sensitive components in electronic control units.
Conventional TVS diode clamping voltage rises with surge current, which can require additional protection stages for downstream components. The TPSMD-FL Series uses FlatSuppressX technology with a foldback I-V characteristic to maintain a lower and more stable clamping voltage during high-energy transients.
The lower clamping profile can allow designers to use fewer external protection components while reducing circuit complexity, PCB area and overall bill-of-materials cost.
The devices provide 3000 W peak pulse power capability in a DO-214AB surface-mount package. They are AEC-Q101 qualified and designed for ISO 16750-2 Test B, previously identified as ISO 7637-2 Pulse 5b.
The TPSMD-FL Series also provides IEC 61000-4-2 electrostatic-discharge protection of up to 30 kV for both air and contact discharge.
Littelfuse said the FlatSuppressX architecture maintains a near-constant low clamping profile under fast transient and high-energy overvoltage conditions while avoiding latch-up risk.
Target applications include zonal control modules, powertrain electronics, infotainment systems, body control modules and other automotive subsystems connected to 12 V power networks.
