Japan invests an additional ¥150 billion in Rapidus for 2nm production

August 24, 2026 / SemiMedia / — Rapidus has completed an additional ¥150 billion investment round from the Japanese government to support the development and planned mass production of 2nm logic semiconductors.

The investment, equivalent to approximately $943 million, was provided by the Information-Technology Promotion Agency, an organization under Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, according to a Rapidus announcement.

Combined with the ¥100 billion government investment completed earlier this year, Japan’s direct equity investment in Rapidus has reached ¥250 billion.

Rapidus has also received ¥167.6 billion from 32 private-sector investors, including Canon, Fujitsu, NTT, SoftBank and Sony Group. Following the latest capital increase, the company’s stated capital and legal capital surplus total ¥424.95 billion.

The government-backed chipmaker is developing an advanced semiconductor manufacturing operation in Chitose, Hokkaido, and aims to begin full-scale production of 2nm logic chips in 2027. Its work also covers chiplets, advanced packaging and manufacturing technologies intended to reduce production turnaround times.

Japan’s industry ministry separately approved an additional ¥631.5 billion in research and development assistance for Rapidus in April, bringing cumulative approved R&D support to ¥2.354 trillion.

Rapidus is central to Japan’s effort to rebuild domestic advanced logic manufacturing capacity and will compete with established foundries including TSMC, Samsung Electronics and Intel.
