Western Digital sells IntelliFlash business to DDN

September 23, 2019

Today, Western Digital announced its withdrawal from the storage systems market and sold its IntelliFlash business to DataDirect Networks (DDN). In addition, another part of its storage system business ActiveScale will also seek to sell.

The IntelliFlash business was acquired in September 2017 when Western Digital acquired Tegile Systems, focusing on arrays of storage systems. According to industry analysts, Western Digital has only been operating this business for only two years, the reason for the sale of this business may be due to the difficulty in operating the storage system business.

According to reports, DDN, which took over the IntelliFlash business, has acquired a number of storage systems companies or businesses in the past two years, including Intel's Lustre business, as well as hybrid array vendor Tintri and software-defined storage leader Nexenta.
