Microchip expands atomic clock production capacity with new Alabama facility

May 1, 2026 /SemiMedia/ — Microchip Technology has opened a new manufacturing facility in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, aimed at expanding production of high-precision timing and frequency control products used in critical infrastructure applications.

The 15,000-square-foot site will focus on advanced timing solutions, including hydrogen masers, frequency generation systems and high-performance oscillators. These products deliver ultra-stable signals with picosecond-level synchronization accuracy, supporting applications such as power grid management, telecommunications networks, satellite systems and scientific research.

Unlike conventional semiconductor devices, atomic clock technologies serve as foundational components for system-level synchronization. Demand for such high-stability timing solutions has been rising alongside the growth of AI data centers, 5G networks and satellite communications, where precise timing is essential for performance and reliability.

The company said the new facility will enhance its manufacturing capacity and help reduce lead times for high-end timing products. The project is expected to create around 30 jobs locally.
