September 19, 2025 /SemiMedia/ — Nordic Semiconductor is accelerating its push into edge artificial intelligence by integrating ultra-low-power wireless SoCs with TinyML technologies and expanding through targeted acquisitions.

The Norway-based chipmaker, founded in 1983, built its reputation with ultra-low-power wireless solutions widely used in consumer electronics, wearables and IoT applications. Its flagship nRF5340 SoC, introduced in 2019, features dual Arm Cortex-M33 cores, multi-protocol 2.4 GHz radio support, and enhanced energy efficiency for connected devices.

Nordic has expanded its AI portfolio through acquisitions. In 2023, it purchased the IP assets of Atlazo, a U.S. company focused on always-on AI processors and energy management for edge devices. More recently, it acquired Neuton.AI, whose automated TinyML platform generates neural network models consuming less than 5KB of memory. The system enables deployment on microcontrollers without the need for manual optimization or specialized AI expertise.

By combining these technologies with its nRF53 and nRF54 series SoCs, Nordic aims to support on-device intelligence for applications such as health monitoring, industrial sensing and predictive maintenance. Local processing reduces latency, extends battery life and improves privacy protection compared to cloud-based AI.

Analysts expect shipments of TinyML chipsets to reach $5.9 billion by 2030. Nordic says its strategy allows developers to create compact, energy-efficient devices capable of continuous AI-driven operation.
