TDK unveils enhanced ERU33M high-current chokes for automotive and industrial applications

September 5, 2024 /SemiMedia/ — TDK Corporation has expanded its EPCOS ERU33 high-current choke series with the introduction of the ERU33M, featuring a new core material designed to handle even higher currents. Addressing the increasing power densities and current demands in automotive and industrial applications, the ERU33M utilizes an alloy powder core material with a softer saturation characteristic compared to previous models, making it ideal for high-performance environments.

These shielded, through-hole (THT) mount components are engineered to support saturation currents ranging from 55 A to 120 A at +100 °C. The series includes three new variants, offering inductance values from 1.4 µH to 7.2 µH and low DC resistances between 0.46 mΩ and 1.2 mΩ. Thanks to a compact flat wire winding design, the chokes measure just 33 x 33 mm with heights of 11 mm or 15.3 mm. The flat coils are thermally connected to an electrically insulated powder alloy core, allowing the component to be mounted to a heat sink for efficient heat dissipation. Customized versions with different inductance values are also available to meet specific application needs.

The ERU33M series is RoHS-compliant and AEC-Q200-qualified, designed for a wide operating temperature range from -40 °C to +150 °C. In automotive applications, these chokes are ideal for use in buck-boost converters for 48 V on-board power supplies, differential mode chokes in the input filters of onboard chargers, and medium- to high-current battery chargers and inverters. In the industrial sector, they serve as storage and output chokes in high-current power supplies, solar inverters for photovoltaic (PV) systems, and Point of Load (PoL) converters.

TDK’s expansion of the ERU33 series with the ERU33M underscores the company's commitment to delivering cutting-edge solutions that meet the evolving needs of the automotive and industrial markets.
