ST launches Stellar P3E automotive MCU with on-chip AI acceleration for SDV platforms

February 11, 2026 /SemiMedia/ — STMicroelectronics has introduced the Stellar P3E, a new automotive microcontroller designed to bring AI inference directly to the vehicle edge, as carmakers move toward software-defined architectures and highly integrated electronic control units.

The Stellar P3E combines real-time control with an embedded neural processing unit, making it one of the first automotive MCUs to include dedicated AI hardware. The built-in Neural-ART Accelerator allows microsecond-level inference and delivers up to 30 times higher efficiency than conventional MCU cores when running AI workloads.

By shifting neural processing away from centralized vehicle computers and into distributed controllers, ST aims to help OEMs simplify system design while improving response times. The approach supports applications such as virtual sensors, predictive maintenance and closed-loop actuation, reducing reliance on additional physical sensors, wiring and external modules.

At the silicon level, the P3E runs Arm Cortex-R52+ cores at up to 500 MHz, achieving CoreMark scores above 8,000. Its split-lock architecture lets engineers balance safety and performance, targeting ASIL-D systems used in powertrain, chassis and body control domains. The device also integrates extensive analog and I/O resources to support advanced motor control and vehicle dynamics.

To address the growing software footprint in modern vehicles, the MCU adopts ST’s xMemory technology based on phase-change memory. The solution offers roughly double the density of embedded flash and enables software expansion without hardware redesign, supporting over-the-air updates and feature upgrades throughout the vehicle lifecycle.

The Stellar P3E is supported by ST Edge AI Suite and Stellar Studio, providing a unified development flow from data preparation to on-device deployment. ST said production of the new MCU is planned for the fourth quarter of 2026.
