Renesas launches three-level buck controller for efficient USB-C power systems

August 22, 2025 /SemiMedia/ — Renesas Electronics has released the RAA489300 and RAA489301 high-performance buck controllers, featuring a three-level topology to improve efficiency in USB-C power systems. The devices are designed for multi-port USB-PD chargers, portable power stations, docking stations, and other compact applications requiring efficient DC/DC conversion.

The new architecture reduces voltage stress on power switches, enabling the use of lower-voltage FETs with better performance metrics. It also minimizes conduction and switching losses, while lowering inductor requirements by cutting peak-to-peak ripple current to about one-quarter of that in conventional two-level converters.

Renesas highlighted that the three-level controllers deliver superior thermal performance, reducing cooling needs and saving board space. Built-in protection features against overcharging, overheating and voltage fluctuations further enhance system reliability, while scalability supports diverse power requirements.

The company also offers reference designs under its “Winning Combinations” program, including 240W single-port and dual-port solutions, aimed at reducing customer design complexity and accelerating time-to-market.
