June 12, 2026 /SemiMedia/ — A fire broke out at SK hynix’s Cheongju M15X facility in South Korea on June 12, according to local media reports, raising short-term attention over operations at one of the company’s key advanced memory production sites.
The fire reportedly occurred at around 9:50 a.m. in a gas room on the second floor of Building 4 at the M15X site. Employees at both the M15 and M15X facilities were evacuated immediately after the incident. No casualties have been reported.
Reports said the fire was extinguished after the sprinkler system activated. Authorities are investigating the exact cause of the fire and confirming the number of people evacuated from the site.
SK hynix’s M15X fab in Cheongju is an important advanced memory manufacturing base as the company expands production to meet rising demand for AI-related memory products, including high-bandwidth memory and advanced DRAM.
The facility is designed to support production of advanced DRAM chips and can be adapted for next-generation 10-nanometer-class 1c DRAM technology depending on market demand. The site is part of SK hynix’s broader effort to strengthen its position in the AI memory market.
HBM has become a critical component for AI accelerators and high-performance computing systems. As platforms from companies such as Nvidia continue to require higher memory bandwidth and capacity, production stability at major HBM and advanced DRAM fabs has become increasingly important to the global semiconductor supply chain.
There is currently no indication that the fire caused major disruption to M15X production. However, industry observers said any incident involving advanced DRAM or HBM production sites may draw market attention while AI memory supply remains tight.
