May 12, 2025 /SemiMedia/ — Renesas Electronics Corporation said it has completed the acquisition of Greece-based Irida Labs, expanding its edge AI and embedded vision software capabilities as demand for intelligent edge systems continues to grow across industrial and automotive markets.

Irida Labs specializes in lightweight Vision AI software and development tools designed for embedded systems. Its technology is widely used in applications such as industrial inspection, robotics guidance, smart city infrastructure, healthcare devices and intelligent monitoring systems.

Renesas plans to combine Irida Labs’ software with its RA microcontrollers and RZ microprocessors to provide more integrated edge AI solutions. The company said the combination will help developers build and deploy AI-powered vision systems more efficiently while reducing power consumption and system complexity.

The acquisition also supports Renesas’ broader digitalization strategy. Irida Labs’ software and development tools will be integrated into the Renesas 365 platform, a cloud-based development environment launched earlier this year to unify electronics system design, software development and lifecycle management.

As more AI workloads move from cloud servers to edge devices, semiconductor companies are increasing investment in embedded AI software, machine vision and local data processing technologies. Industry analysts said edge AI is becoming an important growth area because it can reduce latency, improve data privacy and lower bandwidth requirements compared with cloud-based AI processing.

Before the acquisition, the two companies had already worked together on solutions combining Irida Labs’ PerCV.ai software with Renesas embedded processors. Bringing the technology in-house is expected to help Renesas accelerate development of complete Vision AI platforms for industrial automation, automotive sensing and IoT applications.
