January 15, 2026 /SemiMedia/ — Microchip Technology has released a new family of transient voltage suppressor (TVS) devices qualified to the MIL-PRF-19500 military standard, marking the first plastic-packaged TVS devices to meet the specification.

The JANPTX series targets aerospace and defense applications where high reliability is required but weight and cost constraints remain critical. Unlike traditional hermetic packages, the devices use a non-hermetic plastic package while maintaining military-grade electrical performance.

The JANPTX family covers working voltages from 5 volts to 175 volts and is designed for surface-mount applications. According to the company, the devices can handle peak pulse power of up to 1.5 kilowatts and clamp voltage transients in under 100 picoseconds in internal testing.

Microchip said the devices are intended to protect sensitive electronics in avionics, power systems and other mission-critical equipment against events such as lightning strikes, electrostatic discharge and electrical surges. The products are designed to comply with IEC61000-4-2, -4-4 and -4-5 standards.

The launch highlights growing demand in the aerospace and defense sector for lighter, surface-mount power protection components, as system designers look to balance military reliability requirements with cost and integration efficiency. Microchip also offers hermetic equivalents for designs that continue to require sealed packaging.
