AMD secures major Oracle order to boost AI chip challenge against Nvidia

October 15, 2025 /SemiMedia/ — AMD is gaining ground in the fast-growing AI processor market as Oracle placed a large order for its upcoming MI450 accelerators, signaling stronger competition with Nvidia’s dominance in high-performance computing.

Oracle announced on October 14 that it will begin deploying around 50,000 AMD chips in its global data centers starting in the third quarter of 2026. The systems will integrate AMD processors and networking components to support large-scale AI training and inference workloads.

The deal underscores increasing recognition of AMD’s AI technology as the company pushes to position itself as a credible alternative to Nvidia. AMD currently offers GPU-based accelerators, general-purpose CPUs, and networking chips designed to deliver complete solutions for data center operators.

According to IDC, AMD shipped about 100,000 AI processors in the second quarter, compared to Nvidia’s 1.5 million units. With new partnerships and the launch of the MI450, AMD’s market presence in AI computing is expected to expand steadily.

While neither AMD nor Oracle disclosed the full installation timeline, deployment is expected to continue into 2027 and beyond. The companies also did not specify what proportion of AMD’s total supply this order represents.

The announcement follows AMD’s recent long-term partnership with OpenAI, which plans to deploy computing systems powered by AMD accelerators providing up to 6 gigawatts of capacity. Although Oracle supplies part of OpenAI’s compute infrastructure, the two agreements are independent.

These collaborations highlight the surging global demand for AI compute capacity and reinforce AMD’s growing role as a major player in the semiconductor industry’s next wave of AI infrastructure development.
