August 27, 2025 /SemiMedia/ — Renesas Electronics has expanded its RL78 family with the introduction of the RL78/L23 microcontroller group, targeting energy-efficient smart appliances, IoT devices and metering systems.
The 16-bit RL78/L23 runs at 32MHz and integrates dual-bank flash memory, segment LCD control and capacitive touch. With an active current of 109μA/MHz and standby current as low as 0.365μA, the devices deliver strong performance in battery-powered applications. A fast 1µs wake-up time and a new VL4 LCD reference mode reduce system-level power use, while the built-in Snooze Mode Sequencer enables LCD display without waking the CPU.
The MCU series supports a wide operating voltage range of 1.6V to 5.5V, allowing direct operation from standard 5V power sources in household and industrial equipment. It also integrates functions such as capacitive touch sensing, a temperature sensor and internal oscillator, helping reduce bill of materials and board size.
For human-machine interface designs, the RL78/L23 offers a segment LCD controller and capacitive touch capability, enabling responsive interfaces in appliances such as induction cooktops and HVAC systems. The IH timer provides precise multi-channel heating control, while dual-bank flash allows firmware-over-the-air updates without interrupting system operation — a key feature for metering and other always-on applications.
Renesas supports the RL78/L23 with development tools including Smart Configurator, QE for Capacitive Touch, and a fast prototyping board compatible with Arduino IDE. The devices also form part of Renesas’ “Winning Combinations,” pre-validated system solutions that combine multiple components from its portfolio to reduce design risk and speed up time-to-market.
The RL78/L23 MCUs are available now, along with the Fast Prototyping Board (FPB-RL78L23) and the capacitive touch evaluation system (RSSK-RL78L23). More information is available: renesas.com/en/products/rl78-l23.
