April 3, 2025 /SemiMedia/ — As automotive architectures shift toward hybrid and electric powertrains, traditional 12V and 24V power networks are reaching their limits. The adoption of 48V electrical systems is emerging as a new standard, enhancing vehicle efficiency, reducing current loads, and simplifying wiring complexity. Additionally, the electrification of primary and secondary power distribution systems is driving the replacement of conventional relays and fuses. To support this transition, Infineon Technologies AG  has introduced the Power PROFET™ + 24/48V smart power switch family, designed to meet the demands of modern automotive power systems.

High efficiency with ultra-low on-resistance

The Power PROFET™ + 24/48V family features a compact TO leadless package and includes two high-side switch variants: BTH50030-1LUA (RDS(ON) 3.0 mΩ) and BTH50015-1LUA (RDS(ON) 1.5 mΩ). Their ultra-low on-resistance minimizes power losses in high-current applications, making them ideal for commercial vehicles, hybrid systems, and next-generation electric cars. These switches contribute to improved energy efficiency, enhanced safety, and a more comfortable driving experience.

Intelligent integration for enhanced system reliability

With over 1,000,000 switching cycles, the Power PROFET™ + 24/48V switches significantly exceed the 200,000-cycle lifespan of conventional relays, ensuring greater reliability in demanding automotive environments. They also feature resettable and diagnostic functions, integrating short-circuit, over-current, and over-temperature protection to enhance power system safety. Advanced diagnostic signals enable real-time fault detection, preventing failures in the vehicle’s power distribution network.

Compact design and simplified implementation

Housed in an 8-pin TO leadless package, these switches provide a 23% footprint reduction compared to equivalent D2PAK packages while maintaining similar thermal performance. The ±5% calibrated load current sense accuracy allows precise current monitoring via an analog voltage at the IS pin, facilitating seamless system integration. Additionally, the product family is PRO-SIL™ ISO 26262-ready and comes with a safety application note to support functional safety evaluations.

Development support and product roadmap

For seamless integration, Infineon provides the Automotive Power Explorer online simulation tool, available through the Infineon Developer Center. This tool helps engineers calculate intrinsic fuse characteristics and visualize current sensing ranges for specific loads, ensuring precise and efficient implementation.

The BTH50030-1LUA and BTH50015-1LUA are now in production, with an Arduino evaluation board (BOARD BTH50015-1LUA) available for easy testing. Infineon plans to expand the product line with the BTH50060-1LUA, featuring a 6.0 mΩ RDS(ON). Samples are available upon request. For more details, visit www.infineon.com/powerprofet.
