November 5, 2024 /SemiMedia/ — Texas Instruments (TI) has expanded its gallium nitride (GaN) semiconductor production capacity in Japan to support rising demand for GaN technology and reinforce supply chains, according to a report by Manufacturing Dive.

GaN semiconductors, known for their higher power density, are commonly used in compact electronics such as power adapters for laptops and smartphones, as well as energy-efficient motors for HVAC systems and household appliances.

TI’s Aizu plant, which the company acquired in 2010, includes over 90,000 square feet of cleanroom space and primarily produces silicon-based analog and embedded processing semiconductors. The company noted that the Aizu facility offered an efficient expansion opportunity, given its established track record in quality, efficiency, and innovation.

Rising demand in manufacturing IT, telecommunications, and 5G has also driven GaN market growth, according to SNS Insider. The market research firm projects that the global GaN semiconductor market will reach $7.8 billion by 2032.
