July 26, 2024 /SemiMedia/ -- Merck Group recently announced plans to acquire Unity-SC, a supplier of metrology and chip testing equipment, for 155 million euros.

“The acquisition of Unity-SC complements our technology-driven portfolio in the semiconductor industry. It strengthens our ability to benefit from the growth opportunities in artificial intelligence (AI) as a comprehensive solutions provider for customers developing next-generation chips,” said Belén Garijo, Chairman and CEO of Merck.

Merck said Unity-SC's metrology tools can further optimize the quality, yield and manufacturing costs of chips used for AI, high-performance computing (HPC) and high-bandwidth memory (HBM).

Unity-SC’s measurement technology, combined with Merck’s offerings in semiconductor materials, will help develop the computer chips needed for the next wave of innovations in AI and other applications.

“We firmly believe that 3D metrology tools will further advance the semiconductor industry. Adding metrology technology to our portfolio enables us to offer more materials and more solutions to effectively address the challenges our customers face in developing faster, more powerful and more efficient chips,” said Kai Beckmann, CEO of Merck Electronics.

The acquisition is subject to consultation with Unity-SC France's unions, regulatory approvals and other closing conditions. The transaction is expected to close by the end of 2024.
