December 11, 2023 /SemiMedia/ -- According to reports, Tata Electronics is considering establishing an ATMP (assembly, testing, marking, and packaging) factory in Assam, northeastern India, with an investment of 400 billion Indian rupees ($4.79 billion).

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma recently stated that the Tata Group has applied to set up a semiconductor processing plant in Assam with an investment of 400 billion rupees.

Himanta Biswa Sharma mentioned that the Tata Group and the Assam government had held many discussions and identified the specific location. He pointed out that the decision is subject to approval by India's central government and Tata may create 1,000 jobs for young workers in the state.

Tata announced its entry into the ATMP business and created Tata Outsourcing Semiconductor Assembly and Testing Company, with Raja Manickam as CEO. At the same time, Randhir Thakur, the former president of Intel Foundry Services, joined Tata Electronics in early 2023.

As early as late November this year, it was reported that Tata had formed a team of 200-250 people to identify land and carry out work for the ATMP project.

However, most companies in the ATMP business have set up factories in southern states such as Tamil Nadu, Karnataka or Telangana. It is unclear whether Tata will set up an ATMP factory in a region where there is no investment from major electronics manufacturers.
