Renesas' new battery management IC maximizes battery life

Renesas Electronics announced the launch of its fourth-generation Li-ion battery management IC, the ISL78714. The IC provides accurate battery voltage and temperature monitoring, as well as battery balancing and extensive system diagnostics to protect 14-cell Li-Ion battery packs while maximizing the travel time and range of hybrid and electric vehicles.

The ISL78714 monitors and balances up to 14 series cells with ±2mV accuracy and includes a precision 14-bit analog-to-digital converter and associated data acquisition circuitry. The device also provides up to six external temperature inputs and includes fault detection and diagnostics for all critical internal functions.

The ISL78714 meets the stringent reliability and performance requirements of all EV variant battery pack systems including HEV / PHEV, with safety features that enable automotive manufacturers to achieve the ISO 26262 Automotive Safety Integrity Level (ASIL D). In addition, the ISL78714 monitors and reads overvoltage/undervoltage, temperature, open circuit conditions, and fault conditions for 112 cells in less than 10ms, or 70 cells in 6.5ms. In addition, multiple ISL78714s can be connected together via a proprietary daisy chain that supports up to 420 batteries (30 ICs).

“The ISL78714 battery management IC enables battery management systems with state-of-the-art battery pack monitoring accuracy, fast data acquisition and fault checking capabilities,” said Niall Lyne, senior director of marketing and applications for automotive mixed-signal products at Renesas.
