Qualcomm announces 9205 modem chip for NB-IoT

Today, Qualcomm announced the launch of a new generation of IoT dedicated modem 9205, which is 70% lower power consumption and 50% smaller than the previous generation 9206.

According to Qualcomm, the main application direction of the modem is the Internet of Things, such as asset trackers, health detectors, security systems, smart city sensors, smart meters, and wearable trackers.

The 9205 LTE modem supports several low-power WAN standards, including LTE-M, NB-IoT and 2G, while reducing power consumption by 70% over the Qualcomm MDM9206. The chip's RF transceiver range is from 450MHz to 2.1GHz, which means 23 more bands.

The modem supports ultra-low system-level cutoff voltage and adjusts battery usage based on battery charge status to maximize battery life. In terms of positioning, the 9205 supports integrated Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) positioning, including GPS, Beidou, GLONASS and Galileo.

A Qualcomm spokesperson said: "The integrated application processor avoids the need for external microcontrollers to increase cost efficiency and device security. Compared to its predecessor, the 9205 modem is 50% smaller and more Cost-effective. The modem can also reduce power consumption by up to 70% when idle."
