NXP launches advanced radar processors to boost L2+ to L4 autonomous driving systems

May 9, 2025 /SemiMedia/ — NXP Semiconductors has introduced its third-generation imaging radar processors, the S32R47 series, designed to enhance safety and perception capabilities in advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving from Level 2+ to Level 4. Built on 16nm FinFET technology, the S32R47 delivers up to twice the processing performance of previous models while improving power efficiency and system cost.

The S32R47 can process three times or more antenna channels in real time compared to current production radar solutions. This allows higher radar resolution, better sensitivity, and greater dynamic range—critical features for reliable object detection and classification in autonomous driving scenarios such as urban navigation and automated parking.

The processors integrate a high-performance, multi-core radar engine, enabling denser point cloud data and supporting advanced AI perception algorithms. These features enhance object separability and improve recognition of vulnerable road users or roadside obstacles.

According to Yole Intelligence’s 2024 Radar Industry report, by 2029, nearly 40% of new vehicles will feature L2+/L3 automation, with the share of Level 4 vehicles also expanding. To meet this demand, automakers and Tier-1 suppliers are focusing on improved radar solutions to achieve safer and more scalable autonomy.

Together with NXP’s mmWave radar transceivers, in-vehicle networking and power management systems, the S32R47 aims to support cost-effective and high-volume deployment of advanced radar technologies across global automotive platforms.
