Microchip expands maXTouch M1 controllers for automotive displays up to 42 inches

January 29, 2026 /SemiMedia/ — Microchip Technology has expanded its automotive-grade maXTouch M1 touchscreen controller family, extending support from compact 2-inch displays to large, free-form automotive screens measuring up to 42 inches. The move targets next-generation in-vehicle displays built on OLED and microLED technologies.

As vehicle cockpit displays grow larger and thinner, touch sensing performance is increasingly affected by higher capacitive loads and display noise. Microchip said its M1 controllers use the company’s Smart Mutual touch acquisition technology and updated algorithms to improve signal-to-noise ratio by up to 15 dB compared with earlier generations, helping reduce false or missed touch events in demanding automotive environments.

For large, continuous display designs, the ATMXT3072M1-HC supports touch sensors that span both the instrument cluster and center information display. The device allows a single hardware design to be used across left-hand and right-hand drive vehicles, which can simplify global vehicle platform development. It connects to the host system as a single maXTouch device, removing the need for an external MCU to combine touch data.

For space-constrained applications, Microchip introduced the ATMXT288M1, aimed at small automotive displays such as analog-style clocks and driver assistance interfaces. The controller uses a TFBGA60 package that reduces PCB area by about 20% compared with previous automotive-qualified maXTouch devices, making it suitable for compact OLED and microLED display designs.
