German electronics makers face rare-earth supply bottlenecks

October 31, 2025

October 31, 2025 /SemiMedia/ — A survey by the ifo Institute shows that 10.4% of German manufacturers in the electronics and optical products sector reported material supply bottlenecks this October, up from 7.0% in July and 3.8% in April.

The escalation is linked to tighter global controls on rare-earth elements — critical for semiconductor, sensor and advanced-component production — especially amid export restrictions imposed by China.

In contrast, only about 5.5% of companies across the entire German manufacturing sector reported similar supply issues.

From a semiconductor-industry perspective the findings carry wider implications: material constraints at the upstream level may ripple through chip fabrication, packaging and sensor modules, affecting inventory strategies, pricing and delivery lead times for distributors and component vendors.

While European policymakers are trying to reduce dependence on critical materials by diversifying supply chains and boosting domestic production, such transitions take time — leaving short-term risk of disruption intact.

For many in the semiconductor ecosystem, the latest ifo data serve as a reminder that material sourcing has become as strategic as technology itself. The industry is likely to face continued pressure from rare-earth supply uncertainty, and companies may need to adjust procurement and logistics planning more proactively to stay resilient through the coming quarters.
