According to a recent report by Nihon Keizai Shimbun, silicon wafer manufacturer SUMCO is considering building a new factory to expand production.

The report pointed out that SUMCO had previously stated that when the price of wafers rose sharply, it would consider making relevant investments.

SUMCO Chairman Mayuki Hashimoto said that from 2021, orders for wafers of 8 inches and below for automobiles and home appliances have exceeded their production capacity. "This is the first time I have encountered such a shortage in such a long period of time." said Mayuki Hashimoto.
