February 24, 2026 /SemiMedia/ — GlobalFoundries and Renesas Electronics said they are expanding their strategic relationship through a multi-billion-dollar manufacturing agreement aimed at securing long-term supply of automotive and industrial semiconductors.
The move comes as demand rises for chips used in electric vehicles, advanced driver assistance systems and industrial automation. Both companies said stable semiconductor supply has become increasingly important as these applications grow more complex.
Under the expanded deal, Renesas will gain broader access to GlobalFoundries’ process portfolio, including FDX (FD-SOI), BCD and CMOS technologies with embedded non-volatile memory. The companies expect tape-outs from the new collaboration to begin in mid-2026.
Manufacturing will start in the United States and extend across GlobalFoundries’ global footprint, including sites in Germany and Singapore, as well as its manufacturing partnerships in China. The companies said the structure is intended to give Renesas more flexibility and supply assurance.
They are also evaluating the possibility of porting selected GlobalFoundries process technologies into Renesas’ internal fabs in Japan to further strengthen manufacturing resilience and future capacity.
The announcement comes as automakers and industrial customers push toward software-defined systems, electrification and higher levels of connectivity — trends that continue to drive long-term demand for mature and specialty semiconductor nodes.
