ST targets high-performance markets with 18nm MCU

November 19, 2025 /SemiMedia/ — STMicroelectronics has introduced its new STM32V8 microcontroller, a high-performance device built on an 18nm FD-SOI process and equipped with embedded phase-change memory. The company said the product has already been selected for SpaceX’s Starlink constellation, reflecting the MCU’s suitability for space and other mission-critical environments.

The STM32V8 incorporates 4MB of non-volatile PCM with one of the smallest cell sizes currently available, enabling higher integration density while maintaining cost efficiency. ST said the memory structure is designed to support applications that demand data retention and long-term reliability.

New architecture pushes STM32 performance higher

Powered by Arm’s Cortex-M885 core running at up to 800MHz, the STM32V8 becomes the most capable STM32 device to date. Production is supported by ST’s 300mm facility in Crolles, France, supplemented by manufacturing cooperation with Samsung Foundry to secure future capacity.

Sampling underway ahead of 2026 rollout

The MCU is now in early sampling with selected customers. Broader availability for major manufacturing partners is scheduled for the first quarter of 2026.

Jack Gold, principal analyst at J.Gold Associates, said the combination of the advanced Arm architecture and the 18nm process delivers significantly better performance while reducing power consumption, positioning the MCU for next-generation embedded and satellite-communication systems.
