July 29, 2025 /SemiMedia/ — onsemi has announced an expanded collaboration with motion technology specialist Schaeffler, providing its next-generation EliteSiC silicon carbide MOSFETs to power the traction inverter of a new plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) platform from a major global automaker.

The advanced SiC-based solution from onsemi enables Schaeffler to deliver a compact, thermally optimized inverter with improved energy efficiency and system reliability. EliteSiC’s ultra-low on-state resistance and robust short-circuit capability support high peak power output, resulting in extended driving range, reduced maintenance, and enhanced design flexibility.

“The traction inverter plays a central role in electrified drivetrains, and onsemi’s EliteSiC technology allows us to meet the performance demands of our OEM customer,” said Christopher Breitsameter, Head of Business Division Controls at Schaeffler.

As the EV market shifts from IGBT-based designs to high-efficiency SiC solutions—even for cost-sensitive platforms—onsemi is well-positioned to lead this transition. Its role as the exclusive SiC supplier for the PHEV project highlights the company’s growing influence in automotive power electronics.

“Our SiC technology delivers industry-leading performance in efficiency, thermal management, and power density,” said Simon Keeton, Group President of the Power Solutions Group at onsemi. “These are essential to the next generation of powertrains, not just for BEVs, but also for advanced PHEV architectures.”

This milestone builds on a longstanding collaboration between onsemi and Schaeffler, reinforcing their shared commitment to enabling high-efficiency electrification across the mobility sector.
