July 10, 2025 /SemiMedia/ — GlobalFoundries has announced its intent to acquire processor IP provider MIPS in a strategic move that highlights the current consolidation within the RISC‑V ecosystem. The agreement, pending regulatory approval, is expected to close in the second half of 2025.

The acquisition strengthens GlobalFoundries’ portfolio of customizable IP cores and aligns with its strategy to differentiate through integrated process technology and software capabilities. MIPS will continue operating independently, targeting applications in autonomous driving, industrial automation, data centers, and intelligent edge devices.

MIPS carries a legacy of over three decades, beginning with its Stanford‑developed RISC architecture, progressing through ownership by SGI, Imagination Technologies, Tallwood Ventures, and Wave Computing. After refocusing on RISC‑V in 2020, MIPS launched the Atlas and eVocore core families, along with the Atlas Explorer virtual platform for performance, power, and area optimization.

MIPS CEO Sameer Wasson commented, “Joining GlobalFoundries marks a new chapter for MIPS. Leveraging GF’s secure, reliable global manufacturing network and differentiated process technology will enable us to accelerate innovation in physical AI and deliver greater value to customers.” GlobalFoundries COO Niels Anderskouv added that MIPS’ expertise in high‑performance, scalable compute IP aligns with evolving AI platform needs. “This acquisition enhances our ability to offer flexible, RISC‑V‑based open platforms combined with best‑in‑class process technologies, helping customers push efficiency and performance limits across automotive, industrial, and data‑center applications.”
