January 2, 2025 /SemiMedia/ — Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin has announced that Micron Technology will invest $2.17 billion to expand its semiconductor plant in Manassas, Virginia. The expansion aims to enhance DRAM production for industrial, automotive, aerospace, and defense applications, creating 340 new jobs.

Earlier, Micron confirmed receiving $275 million in federal funding under the CHIPS and Science Act to upgrade the facility and relocate automotive DRAM production from Taiwan to the US. The project is also expected to generate 950 construction jobs and over 400 manufacturing positions.

Micron may qualify for up to $70 million in state government special funding, provided the total investment exceeds $2 billion and 340 new jobs are created, pending Virginia legislative approval.

While specific details of the plant upgrades or additional capacity have not been disclosed, the production of specialized DRAM, which does not require advanced EUV lithography, is likely to involve DUV systems instead.

Micron President and CEO Sanjay Mehrotra stated, "As the only US-based memory manufacturer, Micron is committed to producing long-lifecycle DRAM in Virginia to meet the future needs of defense, aerospace, automotive, and industrial customers while driving innovation and strengthening America's technological leadership."
