ST opens a production line for Tesla in Bouskoura, Morocco

According to reports, STMicroelectronics is planning to open an ECU production line specifically for Tesla at its fab in Bouskoura, Morocco.

Moulay Hafid Elalamy, Morocco’s Minister of Industry announced two weeks ago that STMicroelectronics had won a contract to manufacture microchips for Tesla, which he called “the most important piece, the central connector, and the brain of a Tesla.”

The report said that the production line may become the back end of line (BEOL) of the chipset used by Tesla.

The report further pointed out that Tesla uses STMicroelectronics' SiC metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) in the Model 3 power system. And STMicroelectronics' Bouskoura fab has already started producing SiC MOSFETs for Tesla.

STMicroelectronics has been improving silicon carbide capabilities and production capacity, and industry demand is expected to continue to grow.

In 2019, STMicroelectronics acquired Norstel AB, a Swedish silicon carbide wafer manufacturer, enabling STMicroelectronics to control the entire supply chain of some of its SiC devices while global production capacity is limited.
