Allegro MicroSystems announces the A8060x family, the latest generation of advanced LED backlight drivers. Using innovative patented Pre-Emptive Boost (PEB) controllers, these devices eliminate the audible noise.

The PEB control in the A8060x family greatly reduces Vout ripple, eliminating the common problem of audible noise from ceramic output capacitors during PWM dimming, while also requiring less output capacitance. System can use a 200 Hz PWM dimming to produce a 15,000:1 LED brightness contrast. When using a combination of PWM and analog dimming, a higher ratio of 150,000:1 can be achieved.

The A8060x series is suitable for all types of automotive backlights, including audio, video systems, and dashboards and HUDs. These devices allow a wide input range from a single supply from 4.5V to 40V. Once started, it can continue to work as low as 3.9V. This allows these components to withstand stop/start, cold start, dual battery and load dump conditions in automotive systems. In addition, the series features a range of safety and protection features required for automotive applications. The ALT80600 and A80603 feature four LED strings with up to 120mA per LED string and a total LED current of up to 480mA. The A80601 and A80602 provide up to 840mA of total LED current through four or six strings, respectively.

“This series of LED drivers alleviates audible noise and footprint issues. The A8060x family offers excellent PMW dimming ratios, eliminating the need for analog adjustments and eliminating the noise emitted by ceramic capacitors, making it ideal for automotive applications,” Said Mark Gaboriault, Allegro’s marketing director for DC-DC Regulators and LED Drivers.
