US weighs broader semiconductor tariffs covering laptops and servers

August 28, 2026 / SemiMedia / — The Trump administration is reportedly considering a new and broader round of semiconductor tariffs that could extend beyond chips to finished technology products containing them.

Reuters, citing Politico, reported that laptops, gaming consoles and data center servers are among the products under discussion. The proposal remains under review, with tariff rates, covered countries and detailed product classifications yet to be determined.

U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick favors linking tariff relief to investment in American chip manufacturing. Foreign companies seeking full or partial exemptions could be required to commit capital to U.S. semiconductor facilities or expand domestic production capacity.

The administration is also considering a phase-in period that would give companies time to adjust procurement, manufacturing and supply-chain arrangements. The framework could still change substantially over the coming weeks or months.

The United States imposed a 25% tariff on selected advanced computing chips in January 2026 while providing exemptions for U.S. data centers, research and development, startups and several civilian applications. A new plan covering servers and other chip-containing products would have a substantially broader impact.

A White House official said reshoring critical manufacturing remains a major administration priority but cautioned that tariff reports should be treated as speculation unless formally announced by the government.

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said in May that no immediate new semiconductor tariffs were expected, although he argued that duties could help protect the domestic industry and encourage chip production to return to the United States.

If adopted, the broader structure could affect import costs and U.S. investment decisions across chipmakers, server manufacturers, consumer electronics companies and cloud service providers.
