TECHCET: Silicon wafer shortage will not ease until 2024

April 12, 2022

According to the latest report from TECHCET, the market size of silicon wafers will grow by more than 10% in 2022 to reach $15.5 billion, a year-on-year increase of 14.8%, which will be the first time in more than a decade that the silicon wafer market has achieved double-digit growth for two consecutive years. .

The report pointed out that the supply of silicon wafers is still tight, and the total production capacity is roughly the same as the expected demand. However, due to the different specifications required by different customers, there is a partial shortage. In addition, the optimization of existing production lines on the supply side is no longer sufficient to meet the growing demand.

TECHCET said that currently major wafer suppliers such as Shin-Etsu Chemical, SUMCO, GlobalWafers, Siltronic and SK Siltron will expand production, but the completion of factory construction and commissioning is expected to be around 2024. Before that, the tension between supply and demand is difficult to ease, and the price may rise further.
