Samsung wins 2nm ADAS chip order from Ambarella

September 16, 2024 /SemiMedia/ — Samsung Electronics has secured a 2nm chip manufacturing order from U.S.-based AI chipmaker Ambarella for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), further expanding its foothold in the semiconductor industry. Earlier this year, Ambarella confirmed that it would use Samsung’s 5nm process node for its ADAS chips.

Samsung plans to begin 2nm process production next year, with commercial production expected by late 2026 or 2027. The South Korean chipmaker unveiled its 2nm process node, SF2A, tailored for automotive chips in June, with a planned rollout in 2027. However, sources indicate that Ambarella aims to begin mass production in 2026, which could accelerate Samsung’s timeline for deploying the new technology.

This partnership underscores Samsung’s growing capabilities in advanced chip manufacturing and sets a precedent for attracting more clients to its cutting-edge processes.

Market data shows that TSMC holds a 62.3% share of the global foundry market, while Samsung accounts for 11.5%. Although TSMC leads in the most advanced nodes with major clients like Apple, NVIDIA, Qualcomm, and AMD, Samsung is still striving to expand its high-end foundry business. While Samsung is producing chips for NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel, it is not yet doing so at the most advanced nodes. The company is also collaborating with Qualcomm on advanced node testing, though mass production has yet to be achieved.
